I used to train, diet, work and compete. Now I train, eat, and am retired. I have learned that it is possible to stay fit and healthy while cooking a great dinner with a cocktail in hand. Remember, "Life is not a dress rehearsal"

First Pro Women's Physique
This past weekend was the 2012 Desert Muscle Classic, which included the first "Pro" Women's Physique competition.
There is a great deal of controversy in the "Bodybuilding" community about the results, a lot of people have taken it very personally.
Women's Physique (WP) is the brand new division that I decided I wanted to move to this year, and not too long ago I decided I would hold off another year, to see how things progressed. Based on what I saw at this show, I may never move into that division, but it is still young and changes will definitely be seen.
For now, I am staying in Figure, but my eye is still on WP to see what the future holds.
What I like about WP is the fact that there is a routine to music, it requires more from the competitor than just standing around looking good. It also commands more muscle, I like a more muscular look. Plus, you don't have to wear the ridiculous 5 inch Lucite heels (Yes, they are required in Figure!)
Dana Linn Bailey was the first woman to win her pro card in WP. I have always admired her physique, it is what I strive for, I like her look and conditioning.
Dana has never placed well in Figure, yet she never wavered and always stayed true to her own goals. When WP came along, she was exactly right, winning the first pro card issued, hands down.
At the latest show though, she came in 4th! Above is a picture of the winners. As you look at it, Dana Linn Bailey is on the left (4th); next to her is Jillian Reville (3rd); Karina Nascimento (1st); and Marilena Echohawk (2nd).
In looking at this picture, I think the 4th and 3rd place physiques are without a doubt better than the 1st and 2nd, but obviously the judges did not agree. In my opinion, the top two look like Bodybuilders. For some reason, I didn't think they were looking to award Bodybuilders - I mean we already have a Bodybuilding division, so I am confused.
According to the judges, Dana Linn Bailey was "too hard and showed too much conditioning" for the look they are after. For those of you who are not sure what this means - she was too ripped. "Hard" is the look of tight skin over full muscle, no layer of fat between, rippling muscle. "Conditioning" is the overall look of low bodyfat, striations, separation of muscle groups, dehydration, in other words, how much you have worked to get to this amazing "condition".
I have always been told my conditioning was perfect- except in one show, and honestly, my conditioning was the same as it always had been, so I didn't take that comment seriously. I pride myself in my ability to get into top condition, to lose the fat, and not retain any water, it's not easy.
Although I am disappointed, I just have to sit back and watch how things progress, and I know there will be changes. When they first introduced the Bikini division, it took the judges about a year to actually come to a solid decision on what "the look" was, and it is definitely not the same as Figure, there is a clear delineation. I want to be able to see a clear delineation between Figure and WP too.
In the mean time, I will keep on training and aiming to be as hard and conditioned as possible.

The Olympia
It would make sense that I watched the Olympia wouldn't it? The decisions the judges make determine the "look" of Figure for the upcoming year. Yes, it changes. You see they may want a "harder" look over a "softer" look sometimes or vice versa.
What does that mean? "Hard" is tight muscularity, less bodyfat; while "soft" is not quite as tight looking, not as muscular and higher bodyfat.
Personally, I don't care what the judges want or what they are looking for, I will not change the look I want. This is for me not them.
I like hard. Hard, tight, very muscular. Leave the soft to the bikini gals I say. That's the definition of "soft".
Did you see the difference between the Figure gals and the Bikini? Striking in my opinion.
I still don't understand how they plan to make the Women's Physique division work, they only offer it in the Nationals. To compete in the Nationals you need to qualify at a local show. So if you qualify in a show for Figure, you would have to really pack it on to compete in Women's Physique since your qualification lasts only one to two years depending on the show.
Or do they award the harder more muscular women hoping they will want to move up to Women's Physique?
Well I looked online and what did I find out? No more Women's Bodybuilding! But the Womens' Physique will be at the local level in 2012.
Here is a link to John Lindsay Productions, the promoter or many of the shows in California. You can see the shows and schedules for yourself.
Now, you can even see all of the rules and regulations, so you understand just what the judges are looking for. Of course, it is still very political and very subjective.

Now I need to think this all out. I may want to try my hand at this! It really is a sport for older women, I mean 30 and up. Leave the bikini to the young gals, they are not typically as successful in Figure or Bodybuilding, you need time to develop muscle.
This also means I may have to train more with Roy. Sometimes, it's not just wisdom that comes with age!
And now a video that I found hilarious. This was posted in a closed group I belong to on Facebook called Sisterhood of Iron, over 2000 women strong (literally).
We have all seen Sex In The City right? Well this is Flex and The City. I talk a lot about the "skinny" look and how unattractive I find it, well seems like I am not the only one who thinks this! Check out these women! Email subscribers will need to navigate directly to the blog to view the video.

2010 NPC San Francisco pictures

The bodybuilders have a desire for sheer mass and no body fat, although they are also seeking symmetry, it's the mass they are after. The bigger, the better.
Figure is looking for a balance, symmetry is of the utmost importance, then well developed muscles and a low level of body fat, more than a bodybuilder should display. They should maintain a feminine look, while looking strong and healthy.
Bikini is even higher body fat, a very "womanly" figure, round, curvy, voluptuous.
This is why I think that Figure is becoming the sport of women over 30. The training for Bikini isn't as intense, the diet isn't as strict, you don't need or want the muscle development which can take years to develop. Younger women are finding their niche in Bikini, it allows the fit gals to compete without the level of work that Figure requires.
The Figure categories of 35+ and 45+ are booming, more and more women are competing and the caliber of competitors is better and better every day. I was amazed at the stunning physiques that I saw in my 45+ class. As we lined up when our numbers were called, a scan made it difficult to name the clear cut winners, they were that close.

It makes it all more exciting when you look around and see that someone is giving you a run for your money!
The open height classes were not as competitive, I felt that it was fairly easy to name the top five and the classes were half the size of the older classes.
Bikini on the other hand is booming. More and more women are flocking to the sport. I only know three women who have competed in Bikini, and only one has told me her reasons. One has since moved to Figure after building up her muscle mass. Some have absolutely no desire to compete in Figure ever! They like the Bikini look and want to stay there.
No matter which category someone chooses, they should be free to enjoy their sport, regardless of what others may say about it.
The promoter said this year was the largest turnout of competitors in the history of the San Francisco, that made it long but that much better for all of us.

Balance

Hopefully you take vacation every year, we ALL need a vacation!
Every February my family goes to the same little hotel in Mexico, called Hacienda Eden. We have been going here for 15 years! We get the same room every single time, there are only 14 anyway.
We fly into Zihuatanejo, pick up our rental car and drive PAST the big resort called Ixtapa (whew! Thank goodness!) and keep driving north for 45 minutes, turn down a long windy road to the beach town of only 300 people called Troncones, and then take a dirt road another 2 miles to Eden.
The first thing we do is kick off our shoes, get a big margarita and sit on the beach and watch the sun set.
We will see many of the same people every year, we know their names, where they live, what books they like, we have a great time catching up. Our son has grown up there with the owner's children too and Cooper (my son) feels right at home and comfortable.
Many of us, myself included who are "fitness junkies" have a hard time relaxing and letting go during vacation. I even feel guilty if I am indulging in cocktails, tacos, lobster, deep fried prawns, it's all there and it's all delicious.
It is important to relax though, your body can certainly use the rest and a week won't kill you if you deviate from your schedule.
I do exercise, but nothing like I do at home. My routine is usually up at dawn before anyone else, (except the chef, he is up and heading out to surf when I get up), I then slip on my swimsuit and run up and down the 1/2 mile long beach a few times, and I might even skip or hop some in the sand too.
I do crunches, push ups and pull ups on a tree. I used to lift rocks till I saw dogs peeing on them.... You can find lots of different body weight exercise to do if you put your mind to it, and as long as you do a little, you might be able to relax the rest of the time. I must admit that I am done when everyone else just starts to rise, then I lay on a chaise lounge the entire reminder of the day, reading.
I will have cocktails, and I allow myself 2 pina coladas (they are really, really fattening)...but I think I lose count of the margaritas to be honest.
I try to eat healthy most of the time but I do eat some sinfully bad dishes, Camarones Empanizados dipped in mayo are my absolute favorite, and Dona Nica down the dirt road knows it and makes them quickly just for me!
I usually schedule a couple massages while I am there, Annie lives in the U.S. part of the year, and in Mexico the other part, she and her husband run a surfing school there. I email Annie ahead of time and schedule one the day after my arrival, and the other the day prior to my departure. There is really nothing as wonderful as a 90 minute massage on your patio, with a breeze blowing in an 87 degree heat.
This past year Annie loaned me her kettlebell, here I am walking down her driveway after picking it up to take back to my room.
Don't beat yourself up and do enjoy yourself, vacation is not fun if you are on a strict diet! Remember you can splurge a little, you don't have to blow the whole thing, reward yourself for all of the good work you do most of the time, be kind to yourself.
Balance, it is necessary and possible, just use our imagination.

Butt Glue

What do lacrosse and bodybuilding have in common? Butt Glue. Yup, at least in my world they do!
My son plays on a club lacrosse team and last Friday we attended the year end party. My husband and I were talking to one of the coaches and his wife, and the subject of my competition came up (probably because they were all eating catered Mexican and cocktails and I had water and turkey chili).
So I mentioned the problem all of us gals have making sure that out tiny suit bottoms stay put! They don’t cover much, in fact the rules say they must cover 50% of the glute area, well I tell you, their idea of “glute area” is nowhere close to my idea of “glute area” because my suit bottom in no way covers 50% of anything! Maybe the “dividing line” and that is about it.
He said his daughter was a competitive gymnast for many years and she used something called Butt Glue to hold her suit in the correct place and it worked all day long!
I somewhat dismissed it as how could a little 3 1/2 foot gymnast know more than armies of figure competitors? We have something called “bikini bite” but it doesn’t seem to hold very long, maybe 10 minutes. I am on stage for two divisions, and there is pre-judging and finals which means I am on stage four seperate times…that’s a lot of re-gluing!
I thought about it a couple days then decided to find some Butt Glue to try it out.
You would not believe the comments I got when I called stores about it! Hardly anyone knew what I was talking about and most thought it was a prank, and I was calling gymnastic schools.
I called my friend “C” whose daughter “L” was a gymnast for many, many years and she told me where to get it. I called them up, they had three bottles left! In the car I jumped and had to try it out as soon as I got home.
Here I am with my new Butt Glue holding my suit bottom just where it needs to be! I walked into the kitchen where my husband was sitting having a glass of wine with a friend, they both laughed and said it was like a floor show in Vegas, but I didn’t see any tips!
I can tell you right now that all the women backstage will be asking to use my Butt Glue…it works.

Only the tuff can stick to a diet

As a joke one of my trainers told me I should write a book called "How to prep for a competition in 5 weeks". Why? Because she is always dumbfounded how I can start a diet, lose so much body fat and look fabulous in give or take a month.
I didn't give it another thought, until another client of hers asked me when my book was going to be done.
I began to think, what exactly does it take to "get ready in 5 weeks" and ready for what? We all have goals, my goals may be silly to you, but extremely important to me, and who am I to determine what "ready" may be? You may think you are "ready" while I may think you are not.
I will start by outlining what I am "getting ready for", my goals, my reasoning, what drives me, what holds me back, what makes me successful. All of the crazy things that go through my mind as I "get ready".
What sort of competition am I even talking about? Figure. That's not a command, it's a sport, a division of Bodybuilding, and this needs a bit of an explanation.
Bodybuilding is familiar to most people, it's those big men and women with huge muscles who stand on stage, pose and flex right? It's actually a lot more complicated and involved than that, but this is a fairly good description of the sport.
Women who liked to lift weights and become muscular, yet not as muscular as bodybuilders started a branch called "Fitness". In this sport, the women have to have the muscles (just not to the same degree as Bodybuilders), pose on stage in those skimpy little suits, and perform a gymnastics type of routine.
Then came along "Figure". This branch was developed for the women who liked everything the "Fitness" gals could do, but just didn't have the gymnastics or cheer-leading background, in other words, they were best at just standing around, well, looking good!
We have now added "Bikini" but that's another day.
What's the hardest part?
The DIET.
