Cris "Cyborg" Santos

About a week ago I wrote about my first experience attending a boxing match, and then the night I saw Gina Carano fight Cris Cyborg. I was thrilled that boxing would be a sport for women in the 2012 Olympics.

But Cris has really spoiled all of that, she recently tested positive for an anabolic steroid. She was fined a mere $2,500.00 but her license was suspended by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC), and her last fight against Hiroko Yamanaka was changed to "no decision". She was stripped of her title and this incident may even kill the 145 pound division.

The CSAC has among the toughest drug testing standards of any athletic commission in the country. It is the only commission that requires urine samples to be taken in the presence of a commission representative prior to a bout.

What did she test positive for? Stanozolol metabolites. She is blaming it on a supplement.  She said she was having trouble dropping weight and didn't look at the ingredients as carefully as she should. hmm, this sounds fishy to me.

Stanozolol is an anabolic steroid, which means it is illegal to be sold over the counter, which in turn means it's not going to be listed on the bottle! At least not a bottle that has been purchased legally.

It is a black mark for all women involved in MMA, and will alter the future of the sport altogether. Cyborg was (is) a force, she is the most dominate female fighter in the sport, and to have her test positive reflects on all women in this young sport. Do you need to take steroids to succeed? No, you do not.

Hopefully the sport will continue, and other great female fighters will emerge, but it will be quite some time.

Shame on you Cyborg.
